Letter to the editor, Daily News, June 2, 2004
(Portions of my original letter omitted from publication are highlighted in underlined italics.)
While the loss of Bart Reed as a member of the Metro San Fernando Valley Service Sector Governance Council is regrettable, the accusation of Los Angeles City Council President Alex Padilla of "political silencing" is uncalled for, in my opinion.
Reed served at the pleasure of the City, as do Coby King, Joan Leonard, and myself. Richard Arvizu will also do so. If that makes our positions on the Sector Governance Council politically charged, so be it; such is the nature of public office, whether elected or appointed. The editorial and earlier news article leaves the impression that the Council will have no public transit advocates on it with Reed's removal. Such is not the case: I have been a transit advocate for more than a decade and just because I am not as forcefully vocal as Mr. Reed does not lessen my commitment to making transit service in this region the best it can be in these difficult financial times.
